Auditions

Our next auditions will be on Tuesday, September 2nd and Tuesday, September 9th, 2008. Our first rehearsal for the fall season will be on Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 at 7:00PM. If you're interested in auditioning, please contact auditions@voicesrising.org. Audition slots will be scheduled in mid-August.

You'll sing privately for our Artistic Director, Leora Zimmer. Auditions consist of pitch and rhythm matching. Leora will assess how your tone may fit with the overall choral blend. You do not need to prepare any material ahead of time for your audition. Although reading music is not a requirement of the group, we will ask that you complete a brief written assessment of your musical knowledge.

The group is made up of women with very mixed musical backgrounds, from highly trained musicians to non-readers. We provide tools to learn the music aurally on your own; so the reading element, though very useful, is not required. Ultimately it is your vocal ability and range that will determine whether or not you are accepted as a singing member. Voices Rising rehearses every Tuesday night, 7-10 PM, at Temple Israel, 477 Longwood Ave, Boston. For directions and parking, please see their web site.

"Voices Rising’s enthusiasm infectious"

These are just a few of the headlines from reviews of Voices Rising concerts. Boston women's chorus Voices Rising, a group with infectious enthusiasm, fun, inspiring, uplifting, empowering! In our short history, we have spread messages of joy, hope, peace and tolerance in the Boston area through our concerts, our CD, and numerous benefits and church services.

We have sung to raise awareness for breast cancer and domestic violence, to honor those lost in the Holocaust, and for Tsunami relief. We have celebrated in churches for weddings, church anniversaries, the formal inclusion of gay and lesbian people, and gay pride. Read on to hear our music and become involved with us and our mission.

"Singabahambayo" demo

The songs on the CD are expressions of peace, community, spirituality and life’s celebration. May Songs of Wisdom be a reminder of the beauty that surrounds us, of all the good we have already accomplished and of all that remains to be done. $24.00 per CD includes shipping and handling.

In a time when violence, fear and intolerance pervade our daily existence, our music on the Songs of Wisdom CD offers a refreshing message of optimism and hope. Its central piece, Joseph Martin’s Song of Wisdom from “Old Turtle,” is a musical setting of Douglas Wood’s award-winning Old Turtle BOOK?

The book was written for children, but its message knows no age. It spins the tale of a mythical time before humans walked the earth, when “all the beings of the world could speak and understand one another.”

The story, with its lessons in tolerance, diversity and environmental responsibility, has touched thousands of readers and listeners over the years. And the music vividly paints in sound the images described by the text, while creating a musical space that calls us to prayer.

About Us

Voices Rising is a women's chorus, founded upon feminist principles of community, inclusivity, activism and education. We sing together to give voice to our lives, identities and beliefs, and to celebrate the diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and women's communities in and around Boston. Raising our voices in joy and solidarity, we contribute to the growing tradition of the women's choral movement.
